Design

Murray Cormack Associates designed the highly successful 15m round bilged semi displacement Talisman 49 hullform in 1974. The first of many commercial versions of the frp Talisman 49 was built in 1975 as a 20 knot twin screw pilot launch with what became a Talisman standard arrangement - engines aft and gearboxes forward in U-drive configuration, allowing easy removal of the main machinery via the clear aft deck and keeping the noise source far away from the wheelhouse and forward accommodation. A large number of Talisman hulls have been built to date, mainly for the commercial market as pilot and patrol launches although several fine motor yachts have also been created and the design is still in production with the Halmatic Division of Vosper Thornycroft.

The success of the Talisman 49 spawned the North 40/45 and 58/65 models also produced in frp together with several derivatives built of alloy. The 20m North 65 provided the commercial market with a large capacity hull capable of operating at speeds up to 21 knots as an all-weather pilot or patrol launch. Three vessels of this class operate in the most exposed waters found around the UK at the Sullom Voe oil terminal Shetland. Two further vessels of this hullform are employed for pilotage service in the Pentland Firth, Orkney.

Our design portfolio includes steel and aluminium vessels covering a wide range of activities and operating environments. Standard models include the NorthBay 15 and 17 displacement steel hulls, North 1400 / 1500 aluminium chine hulls and the North 665 / 750 fast aluminium workboat.

Polar Bound

Custom designed one-offs include the massively structured 15m Arctic expedition vessel Polar Bound just returned to the UK after circumnavigating the American continent, wintering in the Arctic and traversing the North West Passage. Also the compact 17m steel passenger and stern-loading cargo ferry Graemsay and frp structures including 10 - 11m fast catamarans and the trim and buoyancy tanks for the submarine rescue vessel LR5.

The new custom designed 15m pilot launch for Aberdeen Sea Shepherd, developed from our larger NorthBay 17m displacement hullform, has been in service at the port for 18 months and has logged more than 6000 operating hours. The success of the vessel's design has been endorsed by the Harbour Board’s recent decision to commission a sister vessel, this time incorporating a harbour surveying facility.
